The Role
The Director of Engineering leads RIPL’s team of software, data, and infrastructure engineers to deliver impactful solutions for our partners. This position reports to the VP of Delivery and is responsible for ensuring the successful delivery of projects on time and within budget through close collaboration with the rest of the delivery organization, the VP of Advancement, and other cross-functional stakeholders.
The Director of Engineering is a hands-on leader, mentoring and guiding individual contributors while also assisting in engineering efforts, helping to foster a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement amongst team members and the wider RIPL community.
Job Responsibilities
Engineering Leadership
* Supervise the work of the individual contributors on the Engineering team across disciplines – including software development, infrastructure, and data science – ensuring they are properly resourced to meet project requirements on time and within budget.
* Build and nurture a high-performing team through successful hiring, management, feedback, and performance evaluation, and by promoting high standards in a positive and collaborative work environment.
* Foster a culture of continuous learning and development by challenging individuals to grow through training opportunities and stretch assignments.
* Serve as a technical resource and mentor to all engineers, modeling technical ownership and sharing knowledge, experiences, and best practices.
* Nurture RIPL’s culture of Engineering Excellence by establishing best practices, new standards, and improving knowledge sharing and documentation in service of collaborative and iterative delivery.
Project Delivery
* Oversee the technical delivery of all projects, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
* Serve as the primary technical escalation point for internal and external project stakeholders, resolving issues and mitigating risks proactively.
* Foster strong collaboration between engineering and other RIPL teams to ensure seamless project execution and solution delivery to partners.
* Provides targeted software development in support of delivery goals, as needed.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
* Collaborate effectively with the Executive team, the VP of Delivery, VP of Advancement, the Director of Product, and other members of the leadership team to ensure alignment between Engineering team activities and overall organizational mission, goals, and strategic direction.
* Work closely with external partners, product managers, and individual engineers to oversee and validate the technical approaches and execution plans for all projects.
* Serve as the primary technical escalation point for all project stakeholders and take accountability for project success.
* Foster open communication and collaboration across teams to ensure efficient and effective problem-solving.
* Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends, identifying opportunities to leverage innovation for greater impact.
Organization and Adaptability
* Develop policies and procedures that optimize Engineering team performance and project delivery in close collaboration with the Director of Product and VP of Delivery.
* Identify and solve both immediate and systemic challenges that impede the engineering team’s success.
* Remove blockers through direct engagement or escalation to appropriate organizational leadership.
Proactively identify and mitigate potential risks to project success, developing and implementing effective mitigation strategies.
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
* At least 10 years of software engineering experience with broad familiarity of web application architectures. RIPL’s typical tech stack uses GitHub for code storage and CI/CD, React for front-end apps and Python for back-end APIs, running using containers and serverless approaches on either AWS or GCP, storing data on managed relational databases such as PostgreSQL, all on infrastructure deployed using terraform.
* At least 3 years of experience managing engineering teams with a proven track record of successful end-to-end delivery of cloud-based technical projects on time and within budget, in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
* Deep understanding of engineering principles and best practices across software, data, and infrastructure domains.
* Experience working in an agile organization including design of sprint ceremonies, estimating work at multiple levels of detail, planning and prioritizing projects, and managing tradeoffs and constraints.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong relationships with diverse stakeholders and communicate complex technical issues to a cross-functional audience.
* Proven record of problem-solving through productive dialogue involving multiple viewpoints or conflicting perspectives both inside the team and between teams.
* Experience with development for the public sector, working within government policy constraints and political realities, and adapting to legacy technical landscapes, is a plus.

* Annual Salary Range for this role is $170,000 to $240,000, depending on experience.
